Is a wood or aluminum patio cover better?

The short answer

Wood is better if you want a cover that matches your home's trim and rooflines with custom detailing, while aluminum is better if your top priority is the lowest upkeep. Wood needs re-coating every few years in Southern California sun; aluminum does not rot or need stain but comes in set profiles.

A wood cover can be built to almost any size, beam profile and rafter tail cut, then stained or painted to match the house, so it looks like it was built with the home. Smooth S4S lumber suits painted covers with clean lines. Re-sawn and rough-sawn lumber hold stain well and give a natural texture that fits craftsman and rustic homes. That flexibility, and the warmth of real wood, is why most of the covers Legacy builds are wood.

Aluminum and alumawood covers come in set colors and profiles from the manufacturer. They do not rot, crack or need staining, which makes them the low-maintenance option. The trade-off is look and detail: they lack the depth and custom features of real timber, and the color choices are limited to what the product line offers. Adjustable louvered roof systems also fall in this group, since they are typically aluminum products.

In Southern California the sun is harder on wood than the rain, so a wood cover's main upkeep is re-coating the stain or paint every few years, sooner on south and west-facing exposures. If you are comparing the two, think about how long you plan to stay, how much the cover's look matters next to your house, and whether a periodic re-coat is acceptable. We can talk through both at a free consultation if low upkeep is your priority.
