Outdoor Living

Can you add ceiling fans and lights to a patio cover?

The short answer

Yes, as long as they run off an existing exterior outlet. Legacy installs outdoor-rated plug-in fans and lights, or low-voltage lighting with its transformer plugged into an existing outlet. A new circuit or hardwired fixture would need an electrical permit, which is outside the projects we take on.

Fans and most light fixtures work best under a solid roof section, where they are shielded from direct rain and sun. Open lattice covers can still carry string lights or low-voltage fixtures along the beams. During design we plan where each fan and fixture goes, then route the cords and cable along the framing before the stain or paint goes on, so the wiring stays tidy and protected rather than draped across the cover afterward.

Everything we use is rated for outdoor and damp locations, including the fans, fixtures, cords and connectors. Low-voltage lighting is a good fit for path and accent lighting because the transformer plugs into an existing outlet and the cable runs at low voltage. Plug-in fans and lights connect the same way a patio heater or string lights do. Placing the cover close to an existing exterior outlet keeps the layout simple and avoids extension cords.

Adding a new circuit, a hardwired fan or a new outlet requires an electrical permit. We keep our projects within the scope that does not require a building permit, and we tell you at the first visit if what you have in mind would need one. If there is no outlet within reach of where you want the cover, we raise that at the consultation and work out a layout or lighting plan that fits.
