How is an outdoor refrigerator in an outdoor kitchen powered?

The short answer

An outdoor-rated refrigerator or beverage center in a Legacy outdoor kitchen plugs into an existing exterior outlet, the same way a patio heater or string lights do. We place the island so the cord reaches that outlet without an extension cord and frame the base so the cord stays out of sight.

Choosing the right unit matters as much as how it is powered. Indoor refrigerators are not built for outdoor heat, so we install models rated for outdoor use, which are designed to keep their temperature when the patio is hot. Their cutout size is confirmed during design along with the grill and other appliances, since those dimensions set the island layout. Placing the refrigerator on the shadier side of the island, or under a cover, helps it run more efficiently.

During the consultation we locate the existing exterior outlets and plan the island's position around them. The refrigerator cord runs inside the island base to the outlet, and any plug-in or low-voltage lighting connects the same way. That keeps the setup tidy and avoids cords across the patio. It also means the outlet you already have does the work, so there is nothing new to wire and no wall or slab to open up.

Adding a new circuit, a dedicated outlet or a hardwired connection requires an electrical permit. We keep our projects within the scope that does not require a building permit, and we tell you at the first visit if what you have in mind would need one. If there is no outlet within reach of the spot you want, we tell you at the consultation and work out a layout that brings the island closer to existing power.
