Can I update a fireplace surround without changing the fireplace?

The short answer

Yes, a fireplace surround can usually be replaced without touching the fireplace itself. New stone, tile or a built-up wood mantel is finish work around the existing firebox. Changing the firebox, gas line or venting is permit work and outside the projects we take on, so those parts stay as they are.

A surround update covers what you see around the opening. Common choices are tile or stone facing over the existing surface, a new wood mantel, a built-up mantel that hides a dated one, and painted or stained trim. Cabinetry on either side of the fireplace can be added at the same time so the whole wall reads as one design. The opening, the firebox and the way the fireplace operates all stay the same, which keeps the job within finish work.

Heat is the main design limit. Combustible materials such as a wood mantel have to keep the required clearance from the opening, and that clearance depends on the fireplace and the manufacturer's instructions where they apply. We measure at the first visit and check those limits before you choose a mantel depth or height. Stone and tile are often the simpler choice close to the opening, with wood used farther away. The existing surface also has to be sound enough to carry the weight of the new facing.

Some requests go beyond a surround: converting wood to gas, swapping in a new insert, moving the gas valve or changing the venting. Those require a permit and are outside the projects we take on. We keep our projects within the scope that does not require a building permit, and we tell you at the first visit if what you have in mind would need one. Surrounds are often part of a larger living room remodel, and you get a written estimate before any work begins.
