How do I keep pets and kids safe during a remodel?

The short answer

Keep pets and kids out of the work area entirely by setting up a closed-off part of the home for them, using a different entrance if possible, and talking with your crew about doors and gates. On the loudest days, such as demolition, consider having them spend the day somewhere else.

A remodel brings hazards a curious child or pet will find quickly: tools, nails, cords, open containers of adhesive, exposed edges and stacks of material. Plastic sheeting does not stop a toddler or a dog, so treat it as dust control rather than a barrier. A closed door or a sturdy gate works better. Remind everyone that the work zone stays off limits, even in the evening when the crew has gone home.

Pets need their own plan. Crews go in and out all day, so doors and side gates can be left open while materials are carried through. Tell your contractor about any pets at the start, keep them in a quiet room with food, water and a closed door, and check gates each evening. Noise stresses many animals, so a day with a friend, a relative or a boarding facility during demolition may be kinder.

For kids, explain what is happening and show them which rooms are safe. Keep snacks, toys and homework away from the work path, and try to schedule naps or study time around the quieter stages. If your only bathroom or your kitchen is being remodeled, plan early how the family will manage. At the consultation, tell us who is at home during the day so the schedule and work path can take that into account.
