What is the best bathroom vanity top material?

The short answer

Quartz is the best all-around vanity top for most bathrooms because it does not need sealing and resists stains from makeup, toothpaste and hair products. Granite is a durable natural alternative with periodic sealing. Marble looks classic but etches and stains more easily, so it suits a lightly used or carefully kept bathroom.

Quartz is an engineered surface made mostly of ground stone and resin. It is nonporous, so spilled makeup, hair dye and toothpaste generally wipe away, and it needs no sealing. Colors are consistent from piece to piece, and many patterns imitate marble. That combination makes it a practical choice for a hall bath shared by kids or a double vanity used every morning. Its main drawback is heat, since a hot curling iron or styling tool left directly on the surface can damage the resin, so use a heat mat.

Granite is natural stone with its own pattern in every slab. It handles heat better than quartz and holds up to daily use, but it needs periodic sealing to resist stains. Marble has the classic veining many homeowners want, though it is softer and acidic products can etch it, so expect it to show wear over time. Porcelain slab tops are also worth a look, since they resist stains and heat well and come in stone-like patterns. Cultured marble and solid surface tops can suit a simpler budget and often include an integrated sink.

Choose based on who uses the sink, what gets set on the counter and how much upkeep you accept. It also helps to match the top to the sink style, since undermount sinks need a solid material with a finished cutout edge. The new top and sink go in at the existing plumbing location, which keeps the work within our scope. A vanity moved to a new wall would need plumbing relocated, and that requires a permit, so it is outside the projects we take on.
