How do I protect an outdoor kitchen from the sun?

The short answer

Protect an outdoor kitchen from the sun by providing overhead shade, choosing UV-stable materials such as granite or porcelain, using outdoor-rated appliances and keeping fitted covers on the grill. Shade does the most, since it keeps counters and stainless steel cooler and makes the space usable on hot inland afternoons.

Start with placement and shade. Before the layout is final, watch where the afternoon sun falls on your patio, then position the island to avoid the harshest exposure where you can. A freestanding patio cover or shade structure gives the most protection, and it makes midday cooking far more comfortable. Inland summers are hot, so a kitchen in full afternoon sun may go unused during the months you most want to be outside.

Material choices matter as much as shade. Granite and porcelain handle UV and heat well, though dark stone gets hot in direct sun, so lighter colors are easier on hands. We steer outdoor projects away from quartz, because UV exposure can discolor the resin that binds it. Stainless doors and drawers hold up well, with 304-grade resisting rust better than lower grades, but their surfaces do get warm in the sun.

Appliances and upkeep finish the job. Use refrigerators rated for outdoor use, since indoor units are not built for outdoor heat, and leave the ventilation space the manufacturer calls for. Keep a fitted cover on the grill once it has cooled, clean stainless with mild soap and water, and reseal granite or concrete counters periodically. Plug-in or low-voltage lighting and any fans should also be rated for outdoor locations.
