How do I handle dust and noise during a home remodel?

The short answer

Expect some dust and noise, and limit both by sealing off the work area, closing nearby doors, covering belongings and planning around the loudest days. Ask your contractor how the site will be contained and when demolition will happen. Demolition and cutting are usually the worst stages, and they pass fairly quickly.

Dust travels farther than most people expect, so containment matters. Ask your contractor to put up plastic sheeting at openings to the work area, protect floors along the path crews use, and clean up at the end of each day. At home, close doors to bedrooms, pack away items you do not need and cover electronics and upholstered furniture. Ask whether vents near the work area should be covered, and check your HVAC filter afterward.

Noise is easier to live with when you know the schedule. Demolition is typically the loudest stage, followed by tile cutting and other cutting work, while painting and finish work are much quieter. Ask for start and stop times and a heads-up about the loudest days, so you can plan calls, naps or time away. Your HOA or city may also set construction hours, and neighbors appreciate advance notice.

If anyone at home has asthma, allergies or another respiratory concern, bring it up before work begins so you can plan around it, and consider staying elsewhere during demolition. If your home was built before 1978, ask about lead paint before anything is disturbed, and confirm that whoever does that work holds the certification EPA rules require. A final wipe-down of nearby rooms is worth planning for, since fine dust can keep settling after the crew leaves.
