Yes, an outdoor kitchen can go under a freestanding patio cover, as long as the grill and other cooking appliances have the overhead and side clearances listed in the manufacturer's installation instructions. Those instructions, plus the cover's height and material, decide where the grill can sit and whether the layout works.
Clearances come first. Each grill, side burner and pizza oven has its own required distance to combustible materials and overhead covers, and those numbers vary by model. Some grills also require an insulated jacket inside the island. Because the requirements come from the maker, the appliances should be chosen before the cover and island are finalized. We check the clearances against the cover during design, so the layout works from the start.
Smoke and heat need somewhere to go. Under a solid roof, placing the grill near an open side helps both clear, and it keeps smoke from collecting overhead while people are seated. An open pergola lets more smoke escape, but its wood members still count as combustible, so its clearances still apply. Avoid enclosing the sides around a grill. Follow the manufacturer's guidance if it calls for a vent hood or other specific setup.
A freestanding cover can stand over the island with no connection to the house, and it is the type Legacy builds.
