Should I choose kitchen appliances before cabinets?

The short answer

Yes, choose your appliances before you finalize cabinets. The exact width, depth and height of the range, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and hood set the cabinet openings around them. Picking appliances first avoids costly changes once cabinets are ordered, and it lets you confirm the appliances will work with your existing gas and electrical.

Cabinets are built or ordered to exact sizes, so every appliance opening has to be known before the order goes in. A 36-inch range needs a different opening than a 30-inch one, a counter-depth refrigerator fits differently than a standard-depth model, and panel-ready refrigerators and dishwashers need matching cabinet panels. Built-in microwaves, wall ovens and range hoods all have their own specifications. If an appliance changes after cabinets are ordered, the fix can mean reordering boxes and pushing back the schedule.

Appliances also have to work with what the kitchen already has. Pro-grade ranges, double ovens and built-in refrigeration can draw more power than standard units, so we confirm what your existing kitchen circuits and panel can support before the package is final. Switching from an electric range to gas, or adding an appliance that needs its own new circuit, requires a permit and is outside the projects Legacy takes on. We help you choose models that fit the connections you already have.

You do not have to buy appliances right away, but you should pick the exact models and download their installation specifications. Check lead times as well, since some high-end appliances take weeks to arrive. Legacy Construction & Design builds the cabinet layout and 3D renderings around your chosen models, so you can see how the range, hood and refrigerator sit in the kitchen before anything is ordered. That one decision keeps the rest of the project on track.
