How can I open up my kitchen without removing walls?

The short answer

You can make a kitchen feel open without removing walls by using lighter cabinets and countertops, a better lighting plan, continuous flooring into nearby rooms, open shelving in place of some upper cabinets, and an island or peninsula sized to the space. Together these make a closed kitchen feel larger and more connected.

Light and color do the most work. Light-colored cabinets, a pale quartz or stone countertop and a reflective backsplash bounce light around the room instead of absorbing it. A layered lighting plan helps just as much: recessed LED lights for general light, under-cabinet lights for the counters, and pendants over an island. Replacing a few heavy upper cabinets with open shelving, or with glass-front doors, takes visual weight off the walls and makes the room feel wider.

Flooring and sightlines connect the kitchen to the rest of the house. Running the same flooring from the kitchen into the dining or family room removes a visual break and makes both spaces feel like one. A peninsula or island, placed with about 42 inches of walkway for one cook, gives you workspace and seating that faces the next room. Lower-profile hardware, a slim range hood and cabinets that run to the ceiling also keep the room from feeling cluttered.

Removing or widening a wall, especially a load-bearing one, requires structural engineering and a building permit. That is outside the projects Legacy takes on, and we tell you at the first visit if what you have in mind would need one. Within the existing walls, there is still a lot we can do, and our 3D renderings let you see how lighter finishes, new lighting and a different island layout will open up the room before anything is ordered.
