How much space does a kitchen island need?

The short answer

A kitchen island needs about 42 inches of walkway on each working side for one cook, and about 48 inches if two people cook at once. Add the island's own depth and any seating to that clearance. If the numbers do not fit, a narrower island or a peninsula is often the better answer.

Start with a simple measurement. Take the distance between the base cabinets on opposite sides of the room, or between a cabinet and the wall, and subtract the walkway you need on each side. What remains is the largest island the room can hold. Remember to measure from cabinet faces, not walls, and to account for appliance doors. An open dishwasher or oven door takes up a lot of the aisle, and a tight island can leave you stepping around it every day.

Seating adds its own requirements. Allow about 24 inches of counter width for each stool, with roughly 12 inches of overhang for knees at standard counter height. People passing behind seated guests also need room, so a side with stools generally needs more clearance than a side without them. If you are short on depth, seats at one end of the island can work better than a row along the side, and a small table nearby may serve the same purpose.

An island's scope matters as much as its size. A freestanding island without plumbing or new circuits can fit within a project that does not need a permit. Moving a sink or range into the island, or adding new circuits to serve it, requires a permit and is outside the projects Legacy takes on. We keep our projects within the scope that does not require a building permit, and we tell you at the first visit if what you have in mind would need one.
