Should I hire a general contractor or a handyman?

The short answer

Hire a general contractor for projects involving several trades, such as a kitchen or bathroom remodel, and consider a handyman for small, single-task repairs. California limits what unlicensed workers can legally take on, so check the current rules on the Contractors State License Board website before you hire anyone.

A handyman can be a sensible choice for a short list of small jobs: patching drywall, replacing a door handle, hanging shelves or swapping a faucet. These tasks are quick and easy to check when they are done. The value of a handyman is convenience on minor work. Before hiring, ask whether the person is licensed and confirm the job is one they can legally do, since state rules set limits based on the size of the job.

A remodel is a different kind of project. A kitchen or bathroom involves demolition, cabinetry, tile, plumbing fixtures, lighting and painting, all done in the right order. A general contractor coordinates those trades, keeps the schedule and takes responsibility for the whole job. Waterproofing a shower, for example, has to be done correctly before tile covers it, because mistakes stay hidden until they cause damage later.

Whoever you consider, check their standing before you sign. The CSLB website has a free license lookup and explains what work requires a license in California, along with guidance on hiring unlicensed workers. Legacy Construction & Design holds California License #790442, General Building (B). For a project with more than one trade, we offer a free in-home consultation and a written estimate so you can see what the full job involves.
