What is a comfort-height toilet, and is it right for me?

The short answer

A comfort-height toilet has a seat 17 to 19 inches above the floor, a few inches taller than many standard models. It makes sitting and standing easier for people with sore knees or hips and helps with chair transfers. It is not ideal for everyone, especially shorter adults or children whose feet may not rest flat.

The extra height shortens the distance you have to lower yourself and push back up. That reduces strain on knees, hips and the lower back, and it can make a move from a wheelchair easier when the seat sits near the height of the chair. The 17 to 19 inch range comes from the ADA design standards and includes the seat. Your home is not required to meet that standard, so the goal is to match the height to the person who uses it. Many taller adults also simply find it more comfortable.

Height is not the right answer for every household. A shorter adult's feet may not rest flat on the floor, which can be uncomfortable and make standing harder, and small children may need a step stool. Some people with certain bowel conditions prefer a lower seat or a footstool, so ask a doctor if that applies. In a shared bathroom, test the height with everyone who uses it. Sitting on a chair of a similar height with your feet flat can give you a quick idea before you buy.

Installing one is straightforward. The new toilet goes in at the existing connection, so no plumbing moves and the swap typically does not need a permit. Pair it with grab bars beside and behind the toilet, anchored to blocking, since height alone does not provide support. Before ordering, we measure the distance from the wall to the drain and the clear space around the bowl, because an elongated bowl takes more room. A comfort-height toilet can be a small standalone upgrade or part of a bathroom safety conversion, typically $15,000 to $20,000.
