Can you live at home during a kitchen remodel?

The short answer

Yes, most homeowners live at home during a kitchen remodel. The work area is sealed off, floors and nearby rooms are protected, and many families set up a temporary kitchen with a microwave, refrigerator and access to a nearby sink for the 3 to 4 weeks of on-site work.

The first step is containing the work. Before demolition, we cover floors along the path from the door to the kitchen, put up plastic barriers around the work area, and protect adjoining rooms from dust. Demolition in the first week is the loudest and messiest stretch. After that, cabinet installation, countertops and tile are much quieter. Expect the crew during normal working hours, and if you live in an HOA community, check its rules on work hours, dumpsters and contractor parking ahead of time.

A temporary kitchen makes the weeks much easier. Pick a spot like a dining room, family room or garage and move in the refrigerator or a spare one, a microwave, a toaster oven or electric griddle, a coffee maker and a folding table. A laundry or bathroom sink can handle light dishwashing, and paper plates cut down on cleanup. Many families also lean on the outdoor grill, which works well in Southern California for most of the year.

The water and power to the kitchen will be off at times, mainly during demolition and rough-in, but the rest of the house stays usable. Pack up the kitchen cabinets, pantry and counters before the start date, and keep a box of everyday essentials handy. Legacy Construction & Design walks you through the schedule at the start so you know which days will be noisiest and when the kitchen will be usable again.
